Track Review: Joyce Wrice & KAYTRANADA, "Iced Tea"

Some collaborations just make sense, and the union of Joyce Wrice and KAYTRANADA is a prime example. The voice behind the reimagined Proud Family theme song and the two-time Grammy-winner have gifted us our first potential Song of the Summer with "Iced Tea."

The sleek, percussive track finds Joyce slinking her way around warm synths and an irresistibly danceable melody. Her soulful tone adds some weight to the delivery of lines that reach for empowerment like "Caught up in my flow, something that you’ll never know / Don’t need nobody to care." Moreover, every riff is well-placed in the sense that they add small pockets of texture to the track's overall feel. No singular element is overwhelming or overbearing; the song exists in a state of cool that touches euphoria at the fringes. "Iced Tea" follows a similar formula to the one that the pair established when they last linked up on "Kaytra's Interlude" from Joyce's Overgrown album. As their first full-length song together, "Iced Tea" pulls from the direct dance-inspiring empowerment of '00s Mary J. Blige to create an anthem for the late spring and beyond.
