Track Review: Eminem, "Walk On Water (feat. Beyoncé)"
Eminem has returned with the lead single from his (rumored) final studio album. "Walk On Water," a stunning collaboration with Beyoncé is a downtempo and sullen track that swells with emotion.
Eminem and Beyoncé were the biggest male and female artists of the 00’s and their collaboration was always bound to occur, it was just a matter of when.
"Walk On Water" is a song about the perils of a pedestal. Our Queen Bey and Rap God eschew their deified images and fan-given titles to express the pressure and anxiety that comes with being a role model to millions of fans. The gorgeous gospel hook is sung by Beyoncé, whose vocal technique has never been better. The level of precision and control in her vocal, as well as the depth and emotion in her voice, provide for a heartbreaking listen. Eminem’s off-kilter flow intensifies and relaxes according to the content of the lyrics. The production also complements the theme by implementing sounds of crumpled paper and the scratches of a pen to emulate the process of Em’s writing. The dedication and carefulness are evident; Eminem’s rawness is refreshing and genuine, a moment of honesty that cannot be calculated.
If this track is meant to set the tone of Em’s final album, this album could go down as one of his best.
